The populist right is railing loudly against the decline in birthrates in the US and the UK - not always out of sincerity, and often with overtly racist reasoning. As a result the left has buried its head in the sand and refused to go near the issue.
But there is no reason, Anna McShane from the New Britain Project argues, to do so.
We need to be prepared to have a debate as to what we really think are the problems here and how to address them. Often a question of economics and affordability, there are many reasons why people aren’t having as many kids - and we should be prepared to find out why, to listen, to learn and to come up with a package of support for families, of all shapes and sizes - to talk about the kind of society we want to be, far away from the racism and rudeness; a discussion focused on reason and radicalism.
That’s the sacred cow Anna offers up this week, and one the team get to grips with - covering issues of child care, culture, climate change and immigration - from the perspective of the centre-left on both sides of the Atlantic.
